The Early Childhood Approach

Understanding The Early Childhood Approach

Introduction of the New Age Range

The NDIS early childhood approach included an extended age range for children below 9 years of age from July 1, 2023.This alteration will gradually develop over the coming two years.

Supporting children and families.

Our approach to early childhood focuses on providing support to children below the age of 9 and their families. It specifically looks at children below the age of six years who might have some developmental delays or children below the age of nine years living with some disability, thus ensuring that they get support at the right time. Of importance, however, is that children below the age of six do not necessarily have to get a formal diagnosis for them to be supported through our approach in early childhood if there are concerns.

Evidence-Based Development

The work in the framework of the early childhood approach is based on data drawn from research and has been designed with the cooperation of specialists in the field of early childhood interventions. Consequently, this approach encourages and improves best practice in early childhood intervention and develops the child’s and family’s capacities to enable them to easily access these settings. It is intended to fulfil the needs of every learner so that these children will be given the chance to develop and learn efficiently.

Family Empowerment

Cognisant of the fact that the development of a child starts at the earliest age, this approach aims to help children and families get the best beginning. The strategy is therefore both family focused and assets-based, recognizing that parents and carers are experts in their own families. All services and support for young children are centred around families to incorporate early childhood intervention into families’ everyday routines in the best way possible.

Our Objectives

  • To facilitate access to the required resource, avail yourself of the prompt support you need.
  • Provide details on other early childhood intervention strategies and how you can help or support your child.
  • Improving your self-esteem and awareness of your child’s responsibilities, including how to handle or address each need.
  • To reduce the impact of learning disabilities on a child’s ability to learn and take part in daily tasks.
  • Mainstream and other community settings, such as childcare or recreational activities that can be accessed by children with disabilities, should encourage more inclusion and participation in your child’s life.
  • If necessary, provide recommendations for other facilities that could help parents, such as support groups.

Resources and Further Information

Learn more about it by watching a family perspective video for early childhood intervention. More detailed policies can be found in a document that outlines this approach to early childhood. These and other related printed materials are available in other formats and can be found in booklets and factsheet pages.

How it works

If one needs early childhood help and approaches in different areas of Australia, there are also early childhood partners who can help get your child to the support he or she needs. They are local organisations that receive funding to implement an early childhood approach locally.

Support for Child Older than 9

However, children above the age of 9 still receive NDIS support from local area coordination partners in their respective regions. You can count on these partners to help you and your child coordinate care, and help you locate other mainstream and community support systems in your region. They can also assist in understanding whether a child is eligible for an NDIS support program.

Ongoing Improvements

The NDIS continually works to enhance its services. This includes improving the delivery of assistive technology and disability equipment, ensuring participants have seamless access to the resources they need to achieve their goals.
